Although the actual causes are unknown, several risk factors have been associated with the development of ganglion cysts:
First of all, they are more frequent in women aged 20-30.
Also, they are more frequently associated with osteoarthritis, as well as with previous injuries or the joints or tendons.
They seem to occur over existing tears – whether caused by significant trauma, or just micro-tears that happen during the normal use of the foot. Although they are not dangerous, they can be scary and uncomfortable. Watch as Dr. Carter drains a patient’s ganglion cyst!
